Uninsured Motorist Coverage-First Party Insurance Claims

One of the only ways to protect yourself prior to being in an accident is to purchase Uninsured Motorist (UM)/Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage with your own insurance carrier. We always recommend to our clients to purchased either Stacked UM/UIM coverage (which multiplies the amount of coverage times the number of vehicles in your household) or an Umbrella Policy which covers you for more than your UM/UIM coverage for a defined amount (i.e.-$1,000,000.00 Umbrella Policy). The statistics in Florida typically indicated one out of three motorist drive without bodily injury liability coverage (BI) or simply maintain low amounts of coverage which may not be enough to compensate you for your injuries. In fact, in Florida, for private vehicles, there is no requirement to purchase BI liability coverage. Therefore, the purchase of UM/UIM coverage is a great way to protect yourself and your own family. Similarly, when we make a UM/UIM claim against your own coverage for injuries you sustained, your own insurance owes the highest degree of duty and fair dealings towards you! These are called first party claims.
